How to Buy Inuit Art
To begin with, let’s define what Inuit art is. Inuit art is hand made works by Inuit people of Canada. Carvings and stonecut Prints are the most popular two type of Inuit artworks. In this article we will talk about Inuit carvings.
Inuit sculpture is a great gift idea for almost any occasion whether it’s your mom’s birthday, your colleague’s retirement, cousin’s wedding or best friends’ housewarming party. An Inuit carving, especially a large one will be a focal point of a living room and a perfect conversation piece. Here are some tips how to shop for an Inuit sculpture.
1. Determine how much money you can afford to spend. Usually the bigger the carving is the more expensive it is. The prices range from about only $50 for a small carving like a tiny 2 inch tall inukshuk to $10 000 and sometimes even more for a large 20 inch tall dancing bear.
2. Think about the subject. If you are looking for a gift for a new mother, a mother and a child carving would be ideal. If it’s a father’s day present and your dad is a fisherman consider buying a fisherman with a fish sculpture. Inukshuks and dancing bears are universal subjects, will make a great gift for a person who already has everything imaginable.
3. The best place to buy Inuit art is an online Inuit art gallery. Consider going to an actual brick and mortar gallery to look at the carvings and touch them but don’t be in a rush to buy a sculpture there. Brick and mortar galleries have rent to pay and their prices are higher. Online galleries offer just the same variety for less money. Ebay is another place to buy Inuit art. You can grab an incredible deal on Ebay, if you are lucky enough you might buy $500 worth piece for only as little as $50.
4. Make sure you are buying an authentic Inuit carving. The sculpture should come with so called Igloo Card. Igloo Card or Igloo Tug is a certificate of authenticity. It was created by Government of Canada to protect Inuit art from counterfeiting. Google the name of the Artist. There are not that many Inuit artists in Canada. You should be able to find a bio on the artist on Google, the date the artist was born, the community of residence, international exhibitions. The sculpture should also be signed by the artist on the bottom in Inuktitut (Inuit language) or English. Avoid buying unsigned art unless it’s an older carving. Many old carvings are unsigned. 99.9% of new authentic Inuit artworks are signed by the artists.
5. The most important thing. You must love the piece you are buying.
Happy shopping!
